Accessibility & Getting Here
The Helgeland Coast stretches from Brønnøysund in the south to Bodø just north of the Arctic Circle. Regional airports in Brønnøysund, Sandnessjøen, and Bodø provide frequent connections to Oslo, while Bodø serves as the primary northern transport hub with direct train services on the Nordland Line and international flight options. The coastal express (Hurtigruten and Havila) stops at several ports along this stretch, making it straightforward to join a charter or meet your crew at coastal hubs like Sandnessjøen, Nesna, or Ørnes.
Climate
Thouching the Arctic Circle does not mean sacrificing comfortable cruising. Thanks to the warm currents of the Gulf Stream, summer along the Helgeland Coast brings surprisingly mild temperatures and long periods of stable weather. The midnight sun ensures continuous daylight from late May through July, allowing you to sail at any hour without darkness. While oceanic winds can develop offshore, the outer archipelago acts as a massive natural breakwater, keeping the inner channels calm.
Cruising & Sailing Conditions
Helgeland offers thousands of islands, islets, and reefs, creating one of the most protected and scenic cruising grounds in the world. You can navigate for days in flat water behind the barrier islands, enjoying steady sailing breezes completely shielded from North Sea swells. Passages between stunning island outposts such as Lovund, Træna, Myken, Bolga, and Rødøy will give you unforgettable open-horizon sailing, yet safe anchorages and sheltered passages are always close.
Going Ashore
Going ashore in Helgeland reveals a mix of authenitc island communities and dramatic geological formations. Hike up the puffin cliffs of Lovund, visit the artisan distillery and lighthouse at Myken, or anchor beneath Torghatten with its famous natural tunnel. With white-sand beaches tucked between granite islets and welcoming local piers across the archipelago, you have complete freedom to combine active outdoor adventures with quiet nights at anchor.
